About this event

Kerstin Ivares and Marit Nordfors are two merited Swedish fiddlers, who will be presenting the basics of traditional Swedish/Nordic folk music. The masterclass is open for all instrumentalists and vocals of all forms and styles.

Kerstin has her roots in Rättvik near lake Siljan in the region of Dalarna in Sweden, where the long going tradition of folk music is still alive and strong. She started playing the violin at an early age, studied violin technique and music theory at the conservatory, and learnt Swedish folk music tunes and styles the traditional way, by listening to and playing with other fiddlers. Her focus is on playing for dancing, with the challenges of getting the right swing and the right feeling and communication between musicians and dancers, but she is also an expert in ceremonial repertoire, often asked to play for weddings and other celebrations.

In 2019 Kerstin was awarded the silver badge and honourable national title of “Riksspelman” by the Swedish Zorn jury.
Marit was born and raised with Swedish folk music all around her from the start. Both parents being dedicated fiddlers, she literally grew up breathing this music and knew lots of tunes by heart even before she could talk.

With a sound musical formation from Adolf Fredriks musikklasser, Marit has developed her skills as a fiddler within the traditional styles mainly from the regions of Hälsingland, where she has her family roots, and Dalarna, where she is currently based. She has a passion for carrying on the history and tradition of Swedish folk music and has studied for and played with many of the giants within the genre, such as Per Gudmundson, Pers Hans and Bengan Janson. Besides being a brilliant musician, she also has a natural talent for inspiring and passing on to others the joy of playing traditional folk music.

Kerstin & Marit had been singing in the same folk music’s choir for a while, when they discovered they also shared the passion for Swedish folk fiddling and started playing together. After some 10 years now, they have developed a vast repertoire of traditional Swedish music, and perform as a duo, or sometimes in other constellations, for dancing, in concerts, at weddings or for other ceremonies.
